DEVGRU-P Disbands and Passes Mein Waifu Is the Fuhrer Onto New Developers

Mein Waifu Is the Fuhrer developer DEVGRU-P disbands due to lack of funds, passing their ongoing project onto a new team of developers.

DEVGRU-P, also known as DEVGRU-P Corporation on Steam, was a group of developers responsible for comedy visual novels that often made fun of politics, especially by parodying authoritarian leaders. Examples of their work include Stay! Stay! Democratic People's Republic of Korea! and Panzermadels: Tank Dating Simulator.

The team’s latest project escalated their notable sense of humor. Their most recent project, Mein Waifu is the Fuhrer, follows Erwin Rommel. The German commander would be called back from the invasion of Poland with news that the German high command was assassinated by Claus von Stauffenberg. The news was already dire by itself, but as Erwin returns to Berlin, he realizes that more than just an assassination took place: for some inexplicable reason, the führer was transformed into a klutzy waifu, with much of the German staff also turning into anime characters. Instead of trying to conquer Europe, Erwin now has to take care of an incapable Adolf running Germany into the ground, with one blunder after another.

DEVGRU-P decided to crowdfund their project on Kickstarter, asking fans to help raise $8,000 for the game's production. In a surprising turn of events, Mein Waifu is the Fuhrer ended up exceeding expectations tenfold, amassing a total of $87,659. This ended up emboldening the team to pursue stretch goals, hoping to match the high expectations of their fans. Key extra features planned for Mein Waifu is the Fuhrer included an additional ending, an extra route, extra characters, and more importantly: full Japanese voice acting with a corresponding translation, as well as characters and sex scenes animated using Live2D.

As has since been revealed in the Kickstarter's latest project update page, these ambitions would ultimately lead to the studio’s eventual downfall. DEVGRU-P has announced their dissolution, citing a lack of experience and the overwhelming costs of animation and voice acting as the main culprits behind their failure.

Despite the developer's disbandment fans of the project can still look forward to the game. The team has passed on Mein Waifu is the Fuhrer to a different group of developers. All of the produced assets, script, and development plans have been put in the hands of a different group, with one of the backers at the helm of the project. The developers that DEVGRU-P passed the project onto haven't been named just yet, though DEVGRU-P has clarified further in the update's comments section: the new team is a circle of independent developers (some of which were backers, themselves), rather than an established studio.

The current plans for Mein Waifu is the Fuhrer include a beta release in Q3 of 2022, with the game's full release following in Q4. All eligible backers will receive Steam keys for the game once the beta begins. Should the visual novel be denied publishing on Valve’s platform, the game will instead be distributed on a DRM-free platform. The new team behind the project will also do its best to produce and distribute any promised physical rewards. Orders made through BackerKit will most likely be canceled, though, as DEVGRU-P hasn’t charged anyone for them and the delivery of said goods can no longer be guaranteed.

Some features that were unsuccessful during the development, such as animation, may not appear in the initial build of the game. For now, the new team will aim to release the game with a focus on what it can currently offer, while avoiding the feature creep that led to DEVGRU-P’s downfall.

Thus far, the news has been met with a mixed reception. Some backers are relieved that the visual novel will be released at all, while others have voiced criticism at DEVGRU-P for a mismanagement of funds and lack of communication prior to the announcement. More details about the fate of the project will likely appear in the future, near the release of the beta version.
