Former Squadron Commander Faces Civilian and Military Trials for Possessing "Virtual Child Porn"

Lt. Col. Keith Vollenweider will be going on trial for possessing “virtual child porn” this month.

Lt. Col. Keith Vollenweider, the former commander of the 49th Medical Support Squadron of the Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, will be on trial for possession of “virtual child porn” along with two counts of tampering with evidence this month. He will also be court-martialed in August, which will begin August 5th and is expected to end August 10th.

All quotes come from the AirForceTimes.

The charge sheet said Vollenweider knowingly possessed “visual depictions, such as drawings, cartoons and virtual images, that depict minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct,” the charge sheet said. The Air Force Judge Advocate General’s website said Vollenweider’s court-martial will begin at Holloman on Aug. 5, and is expected to conclude Aug. 10.

Vollenweider’s charge sheet does not specify if the content he possessed depicted drawings, 3D models, or cartoons of minors performing sexual acts, but it is clear that it did not involve real children. He was also charged him with violating Article 133 of Uniform Code of Military Justice, or participating in behavior that’s ungentlemanly and unfitting of an officer, such as being involved in a scandal.

In October 2017, the district attorney’s office announced Vollenweider’s indictment and, according to the AirForceTimes, “A release at that time said Vollenweider allegedly distributed child pornography over the Internet to members of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force of the New Mexico attorney general.”

The Alamogordo Police Department searched his home and confiscated his electronic devices, which supposedly had images of “virtual child porn” on them. Police officials said Vollenweider might have used software to hide his IP address and attempted to permanently delete files from his computer using other specialized software. This investigation added two charges of evidence tampering.

The Alamogordo Police Department also searched his residence and seized multiple electronic devices that allegedly contained the images, the release said.

Officials said Vollenweider allegedly used software to hide his Internet Protocol address and tried to permanently delete files from his computer using specialized software, which resulted in the two evidence tampering charges.

Currently, Keith Vollenweider is working as a plans and and programming officer at the 49th Medical Support Squadron. If you want to read more about the Vollenweider “virtual child porn” charges, read AirForceTimes' article on the subject.
