Crunchyroll “appropriates” the English version of DanMachi Memoria Freese by removing the ability to touch girls in the interaction screen.
DanMachi Memoria Freese, or Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? MEMORIA FREESE, is a mobile game adaptation of a dungeon-crawling anime and light novel series. The title was originally released last year in Japan, where it quickly reached three million downloads, a number that has since grown.
In the game, you collect a party of adventurers to send them into linear dungeons, where they move forward and face new encounters. The game features standard turn-based RPG combat and progression mechanics, similar to early games of the genre. Behind the many battles and quests is a fully voice-acted storyline retelling the events of the anime, as well as completely new story content written under the oversight of the light novel’s author, Fujino Ōmori.
Some of Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? MEMORIA FREESE main features involve collecting new girls from virtual capsule toy machines known as gacha. The girls come in various levels of rarity and possess unique skills. Newly acquired ladies can then be added to the player’s party to fight in the dungeons. Additionally, players can become acquainted with the girls, unlocking new quests and dialogue with them as they get closer to each other. The girls can be customized by changing their dress, and in the original Japanese version of the game, they can be touched. Clicking the on the girl’s body will net various reactions, often making them angry.
Recently, an English version of the game was published by Crunchyroll. Players quickly noticed that the ability to touch the girls they've acquired is absent. A member of the official community team quickly confirmed that suspicion.
According to the official community team's response on Reddit, the feature was removed as a form of appropriation, rather than censorship, which they originally promised to avoid. Players interested in still using the function have been recommended to play the Japanese version of the game instead.
Hi! Official DanMemo Community Team here. The "touching" feature was removed from the English version of the game, yes. Not as a matter of censorship or depriving non-Japanese audiences of anything, but due to what is appropriate and not appropriate for English audiences. Hope that answers your question!
If you would like that feature, it is still in the Japanese version.
