Independent developers Kuja and Abelius are developing a spiritual successor to Legend of Krystal, known as Legend of Krystal: Rebirth.

Legend of Krystal was a widely popular furry flash game from 2010. The game, while lacking in content, presented an easy to understand and reconstructed gameplay style. This brought life to its dedicated forums, where many fans of the project tried to continue the work after PlayShapes, the project’s original artist, abandoned it. Legend of Krystal became a staple in furry lewd gaming, as well as a mother to multiple spin-off titles based on its style.

The artist Kuja and the lead developer Abelius who work on Legend of Krystal: Rebirth are two enthusiastic fans of the original. The duo is eager to make it anew, just as many before them. This time, however, the difference lays within the game’s quality. Their new project is not aiming to continue the work of the original, but to remake and reimagine it from scratch. The title is planned to boast a new story and design philosophy. It is currently being developed using the Unity engine, with the team “aiming for quality, aesthetics, and gameplay.”

In this new take on the original story, lieutenant Krystal (designed after the character of the same name from the Star Fox series) finds herself sent on a chase mission after an escaped convict known as a lust demon. Due to the geographical and political specifics of the mission, she’s sent alone. After the failure of her technological gear she finds herself stuck on a planet populated by mostly tribal and magic-driven lizard people. Her new goals are to find allies and acquire means to fulfill her mission.

The developers are planning to make the game a mix of a sim, strategy and a beat’em up RPG. Krystal will have to find her place in a lizardmen clan and climb within its social ranks. Starting as a handmaiden to the least important tribe’s women and ending at the right side of the clan’s chieftain. While a Krystal sim might remind some of Gorepete’s Legend of Krystal vG, the strategy and RPG aspects of the design sound fresh and promising. As the sharp claw clan finds itself devoid of both men and resources, it becomes a prey to its rivals, who accumulated grief and remorse after being on the other end of the stick for the longstanding past. With her military experience, Krystal is to act as a soldier. Over time, she’d become a strategist for both defensive and counteroffensive measures.

Right now, we will have to take the word of the developer duo for most of these features. For the curious, there is a very early tech demo of the game available on the team’s Patreon. You can walk around the map, judge the early art and see the prelude of the story; however, aside from the dialogue trees and point and click functionality, no actual gameplay is available as of yet. For those interested in supporting the project, supporters on the team’s Patreon are capable of influencing the development process by partaking in things such as voting polls.
