Lick twice for service

Introductory paragraphs are to game reviews as the devil is to the world: the root of all evil and the reason hornets still exist. Unfortunately, such evils are necessary and cannot be abolished. To ensure this review starts today on the right side of the bed, I prepared the following poem to introduce doujin circle Anagura’s erotic RPG.

Mary had a little master, her tits were small as hell

and everywhere that Mary went, the master was raped as well.

Ecchi Mery and the Perils of the Cosmic Shrine is the kind of RPGMaker game you could potentially find anywhere online for free and promptly forget about it just after completion. Harsh as that may sound, the game does very little in overall design and art direction to distinguish itself among other amateur competitors. Do not stop reading this article at this point, though: There are still several levels of enjoyment you can get out of this title, despite its many flaws.

One such level of enjoyment is undoubtedly the simple to follow and sexual humor-laden plot. Ecchi Mery starts off—as all pornographic games in my mind should—with a rape scene of Mery, our titular blonde-haired lead. Turns out that sequence was just a dream as Mery is awakened by her maid servant Mary. Through a brief exposition between the girls, we learn of Mery’s noble European origins and her quest to seek out an “item of value” as a rite of passage for the magic academy she’s enrolled in. The voluptuous Mary acts as Mery’s bodyguard on their merry way to the country of Cipangu, (Japan, as was known to the Portuguese in the 13th century) where said item is supposed to be located.

Absolutely the first screen of the game.

From there, the ladies get into a series of trials and tribulations that, among many things, lead them to getting raped on multiple occasions. I wasn’t being coy or snarky when I was picking the subtitle for this review either. Virtually any kind of plot or gameplay progression involves some form of sexual activity. Want to become a shrine maiden and use Taoist magic? Make sure the priest gives you a good fucking under the guise of a “purifying ritual”. Want to get inside this large guarded mansion? Better drop the guard’s pants and suck the entrance permit out of his dick. Last, but not least, you also get boned by an ancient lake demon to learn a set of nifty and helpful spells.

We have a deal, mister!

All the above-mentioned events make up the game’s narrative structure and drive it forward with sexual humor. There is very little in Ecchi Mery that isn’t tongue-in-cheek wacky, and what’s there is entertaining enough to make you keep playing all the way to the end.

The game’s turn-based RPG system is bare-bones basic, with a few curve balls thrown in here and there in an attempt to make it more interesting and challenging. All combat is done by engaging baddies visible on the map screen and then simply taking turns using basic attacks, spells, items and other skills until you or the opponent drop dead.

Unlike most RPGs, defeating standard monsters encountered on all but few of the Cosmic Shrine’s thirty floors won’t yield any experience. If you plan to level up and gain more power, you will have to defeat a boss found on every tenth floor of the dungeon, or take part in a specific in-game event that will reward you with stat allocation points. Speaking of those stat points, Ecchi Mery gives the player complete freedom in what way they want to develop Mery and Mary. Even after assigning points at the Buddha statue located in the game’s hub, Hinaya Village, you have the option to switch all of them around to your satisfaction. All of this may sound like a fabulous idea and it would probably be, in any other game. In reality, there are very few viable builds that will help you get through the game’s dungeon monsters effectively, and even fewer to help you survive the title’s small pool of imbalanced bosses. All the enemies I couldn’t avoid fighting dropped like flies to one or two hits when I focused Mery’s stats on magic attack, and Mary’s on physical attack. The only thing that slowed my progress significantly were the bosses, which generally require luck more often than strategy to defeat.

During combat, Mery and Mary will happily jump on enemies with all the cute girly noises they can muster.

Whenever you’re not trying to get deeper into the Cosmic Shrine or trying to trigger new events to advance the plot, you will be grinding enemies for items that can be synthesized at a special village shop into more powerful equipment and support items. Seeing as how the monsters don’t even bother to drop money, I found very little incentive to keep on fighting any of them after having collected all the crafting material I needed for more powerful gear. Being the curious and thorough type of player though, I still put in at least an hour on just collecting item drops in the hopes of using them later on. Since most enemy drops turned out to be foodstuff, my whole inventory quickly became a venerable farmer’s market full of fruit, vegetables, and the occasional Japanese rice ball or tayaki pastry.

Due to the dungeon monsters not dropping any cash and all of the other drops selling for ridiculously small amounts in the village shops, the only other direct way of earning money I found was finding it in the chests strewn about Hinaya and the Cosmic Shrine. Prostitution is also an option!

Achievement unlocked!

To my dismay, the brothel segments in which you earn 500 coins per satisfied customer weren’t that numerous, and I couldn’t expect a consistent income by whoring out my two heroines. Due to this, I was forced to make quite a few calculated purchases to get my girls primed for more dungeon adventures.

Having vented all of my frustrations connected with Ecchi Mery’s gameplay, it’s time to delve a bit deeper into the game’s porn content.  Ecchi Mery and the Perils of the Cosmic Shrine was undeniably created with the erotic contents being the focus in mind. The crème de la crème of what the game has to offer is found solely in sultry sex scenes. To the developer’s credit, each one of them differs from the others significantly, and the amount of fetishes included is worthy of praise. Multiple vanilla sex positions, blowjobs, handjobs, tit fucking, virginal defloration, tentacle rape and watersports are just a few examples of sexual content Ecchi Mery has in stock. All of these are voiced by two talented ladies that really make the characters of Mery and Mary come alive. The VA’s work in the erotic scenes presents a good contrast between the shy and sexually inexperienced Mery, and the lustful Mary.

The angry roars of big breasts fanatics can be heard all throughout the world.

At this point I have to cut my praise short for the game’s porn material and talk about the badly drawn elephant in the room: character artwork. While most of Ecchi Mery’s art and sound assets are stock, the character sprites and drawings are completely original, but that doesn’t make them instantly better. The fact that the default RPGMaker character portraits look a lot better than what Anagura’s artists put into the game is rather telling. The artwork on both Mery and Mary is very low in detail and the body proportions in a lot of the HCGs are off by a huge margin. All of the genital areas in the game are censored as well despite an official Western release, which also doesn’t play in Ecchi Mery’s favor. If not for the above-average voice acting and the abundance of pornographic content, the title wouldn’t have much else to offer to a demanding lewd gamer.

Normally, the tag-team of gameplay and art blemishes I’ve divulged into during this review would be enough for me to tell you not to touch this game with a 10-foot pole. Thankfully, its short length and affordable price coupled with plentiful erotic content save Ecchi Mery and the Perils of the Cosmic Shrine from being a terrible experience. If you decide to venture into the Cosmic Shrine, make sure to go in with low expectations to avoid any major disappointment.

LewdFactor

Ecchi Mery explores a plethora of sexual fetishes through varied pornographic scenes and events. The two main heroines are voiced during all of the sex scenes, and that in turn makes up for the mediocre character art in spades.
