Behind the Dune, a parody of science fiction franchise Dune, is currently in development by David Goujard. Set in a distant interstellar future, embark on a journey of political intrigue.
If you’re a fan of science fiction, you’ve probably heard of Dune. Set 21,000 years in the future, the world of Dune is ruled by an aristocratic hierarchy of Great Houses, who in turn owe fealty to a single Emperor. A strange universe where artificial intelligence is prohibited, humanity has developed the mind’s own capacity instead.
French developer David Goujard has created a parody of this sci-fi epic, aptly named Behind the Dune. The game takes place in a slightly altered version of Dune’s universe — one that’s a little bit naughtier than before.
All the trappings of the original are still intact, of course; the strange intergalactic currency “Spice”, the monstrous sandworms that inhabit the lands, it’s all there. You’ll enter this world as Paul, the son of a powerful family living on the desert world of Dune.
Due to your high position, it’s up to you to ensure the flow of “Spice” to the Imperium. Spice is essential to interstellar travel and is only available on your homeworld. Your father has tasked you with overseeing the planet’s mining operations, sending you out into the wild to build up a crew of capable hands.
A rather interactive visual novel, you’ll traverse multiple areas in pursuit of your goals. You’ll spend most of your time among the Fremen, a native, tribal group seemingly run by women. That’s probably going to be just fine for most.
With their help, you’ll be able to up your mining operations, providing enough Spice to ensure your continued existence on Dune.
As an adult parody, Behind the Dune takes a slightly different approach to the concept of the original. You’ll be able to seduce (or simply buy) NPCs, some of whom will be more than happy to accommodate you. Goujard, also known as Balsamique, has provided his own art for the project, so fans of his top-heavy style will be right at home here.
Development for Behind the Dune began earlier this year and is projected to be completed by January of 2017. The game is still in its infancy, but Goujard already has some content available for players to try out. Goujard hopes to add more as time goes on, including re-worked English translations.
If you want to give Behind the Dune a shot, you can currently play a tester build on Goujard’s DeviantArt. Some features are missing from the newer build we described here, but the developer hopes to have another release sometime next month. You’ll also find Goujard’s other projects here, which includes an adult parody of Mass Effect.
If you’d like to support Behind the Dune and other such projects, you can find Goujard’s Patreon here. Pledging will net you access to both art and the latest build of the game, should you become a fan of his work.
