Adult video giant Pornhub has released some data on Overwatch porn, specifically during the beta period that took place this weekend, which shows a marked increase in searches for the term.
Pornhub is quite good at keeping tabs on the world’s porn interests, which is either pretty cool or absolutely terrifying. Privacy concerns aside, Pornhub often share those tabs, which gives us an insight into how we consume porn.
While the majority of people will search Pornhub for something innocuous, there are many people out there who choose not to. Back in January, we covered one of Pornhub’s more interesting data releases, which showed that a reasonable number of people search for Minecraft porn. The site actually hosts quite a few videos of it – even Let’s Plays for some bizarre reason.
In reality, this is no great surprise. Pornographic fan art, or “Rule 34” as it’s known, is quite pervasive in internet culture. It just happens that a great many artists choose to express their love of a series by making a shitload of porn from it.
The latest release by Pornhub shows the love for Rule 34 is still alive and well. Overwatch has just had its first open beta this weekend, which started on May 5th. It allowed people to try out the game for the first time and gives the developers feedback on what needs to be tweaked before the full release.
Interestingly, Pornhub’s new data shows that there was a staggering 817% increase in interest for Overwatch porn on the site. This upward trend coincides precisely with the open beta’s first day, May 5th. Overwatch has been marred in controversy recently over allegations of sexism, so perhaps this is some sort of cosmic irony.
Best of all, it looks like the term “Overwatch Tracer” tops the charts – by a landslide. In something of a Streisand Effect, it looks like Blizzard have inadvertently created a sex symbol. Considering Tracer was at the heart of the allegations, it’s no wonder the universe has struck back and made her into the very thing the developers sought to avoid.
Of course, this is only on Pornhub. Anyone who frequents sites like Tumblr or anywhere else artists post will know that Overwatch porn is pretty much everywhere. From humble line-art to fully realised Source Filmmaker projects, there’s no doubt that Overwatch has all the right chemistry. Sex really sells.
Perhaps Blizzard realised this, especially as the “reworked” Tracer pose is arguably sexier than before. While a small group of sex-negative people spew vitriol at anything short of a snow-suit, the reality is that people have, and always will, like a good looking character. Whether it was by accident or something that was always planned, there’s no question that Overwatch produces a ton of high-quality naughtiness.
