Catch Canvas Surpasses Funding on Day 1

Catch Canvas, a game by indie developer Unwonted Studios, has surpassed its initial goal of $3000 on Kickstarter. The game, which is Unwonted Studio’s third project, will be a visual novel revolving around the world of art.

There are lots of little indie studios out there, all trying their hand at creating something new. Kickstarter has been a wonderful (and awful) thing for a lot of these fledgling developers, giving them the opportunity to raise capital without need for a publisher. Unwonted Studios is one such success story. Founded in 2015, Unwonted Studios has placed a number of projects on the service, successfully creating the games they want to make.

Their first title, No One But You, was funded back in May of 2015, netting a generous $18,012 to go toward development. Unfortunately, their second project failed due to internal issues, but Unwonted pushed through. We now have another project on the table – Catch Canvas. As Unwonted’s third project, they’ve already built up a substantial fanbase, and the project has actually already been funded. Within a day.

Catch Canvas, an original English visual novel, follows the story of an unnamed protagonist, who’s all about art. Your story will begin just as you arrive to visit your uncle, a world renowned artist, beginning your tuition to hone your own skills in the medium. With your uncle teaching you, you hope to push new boundaries, even displaying your achievements at a prestigious art exhibition that’s just around the corner. Of course there’s one problem.

Your uncle isn’t there. After your arrival, you discover that your uncle is nowhere to be found, and what’s more, you’ve been left a task. You have been asked to tutor three young women, each an aspiring artist, and prime them for the exhibition. With your own art skills you may be able to pull it off, but you hit another snag. The girls don’t care much for you, a stranger, and have no real desire to learn or listen to you. That’s artsy types for you.

Catch Canvas will allow you as the player to experience the story in your own way. While things are still in early development, Unwonted Studios already has some features nailed down. For one, you’ll be able to choose your gender and name, allowing you to play as male or female as you desire. This will of course be reflected in the story, which makes heavy use of romance, allowing you to engage in a light spot of yuri.

There will also be a variety of choices to make during the course of play, as is standard in most visual novels, allowing you to shape the narrative as you go. This includes the mentioned romance, with Catch Canvas giving you the choice of each of the three girls. The girls are made to appeal to a range of players, with the bubbly Nachan or the quiet and reserved Dawn, so it really depends on what gets you going.

If you want to find out more about the project, you can check out Catch Canvas’ Kickstarter page . The project has already reached (and surpassed) its funding goal of $3000, and with 29 days to go it’s looking good for Unwonted Studios. Unwonted are working with Razz, a dedicated artist, to ensure the project looks the part, so head on over and see if it’s for you. You can also check out the trailer below.
