Street Fighter V Fans Start Campaign to Change Censored Scenes Back

Loyal fans of Street Fighter, one of the most loved and well-known fighting games of all time, have started a campaign. The petition aims to remove censorship from the game, which has been implemented in some scenes of the game for the Western market.

Street Fighter often garners controversy. One quick Google search reveals articles from various outlets, all of which dwell on the purported sexism within the games and the community itself. To many people, Street Fighter just is what it is – it’s always been quite unrealistic, with fantastical outfits and stylistic choices. The most recent casualty in the crusade against sexy was launched with R. Mika, who drew a lot of negative attention at her announcement. That’s not to say everyone felt the same, with some female writers understanding that “her whole schtick is goofy, and way over the top”. She’s exactly what she’s designed to be.

This still prompted a reaction from Capcom. Earlier this month, it came to light that R. Mika had been somewhat censored , altering a scene from her super move. Capcom also changed up the end result of the move itself, altering the opponent’s legs so they no longer split. The scene in question, however, has been changed to no longer show off her admirable assets. The original sees R. Mika pose for the camera and give her butt a healthy slap, as if to say ‘come get some’. It’s funny, it’s cheeky, and most of all, it’s silly. In a game where heated trash talking is pretty accepted, it’s not remotely out of place that such a taunt would exist.

The change upset some fans of the game, which deemed the move a form of censorship. Others attest that there might be a large portion of the audience who find butt slaps to be “juvenile and obnoxious, and may not bother with the game” if they were kept in. Regardless, the backlash was enough to start a petition to urge Capcom to rethink the decision. Found on Change.org, the petition states “We do not want to accept any censorship of this kind, and we do not wish to purchase censored games”. In the beta version of the super move animation, the camera pans upwards to hide the butt slapping from view. It seems the butt slapping is still there, you just can’t really see all of it. The petition currently sits at 3,317 supporters, and even grew while this article was being written.

It’s certainly a minor infraction by Capcom, who haven’t bowed to any pressure to make more extreme changes. R. Mika still retains her revealing costume, and the special move still sees the enemy character squished by two plump booties. The situation is certainly intriguing; is altering the butt slap enough to attract the audience Capcom would be appeasing? As R. Mika remains almost entirely unchanged, who is the alteration for? The slap sound is still there, and it’s still very obvious what’s happening during the scene. At this point in time, it’s not known what Capcom hopes to achieve with this, but we’re bound to find out. Street Fighter V is still in beta right now, so all of this is subject to change. Of course, it could just be as simple as an ESRB ratings board decision. We don’t know, so there’s still the potential for this to go back to how it was, butt only time will tell.
