The latest entry in the series, Utawarerumono: False Mask—recently revealed by developer Aquaplus, is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita in Japan. Although this title is set for release in September, Aquaplus has announced they already have a third game currently in development.
Naoya Shimokawa, president of Aquaplus recently told Japanese gaming publication, Famitsu.
“Actually, we already planned on making Utawarerumono a trilogy,”
“Four years ago, we announced [the sequel] with the provisional and straightforward title Utawarerumono 2” Shimokawa said, “but since this is one act in a big “Three Kingdoms-like” historical tale, I didn’t feel comfortable titling the sequels 2 and 3. So, to break history into fragments, we decided to use subtitles.”
Shimokawa also stated that the reason they had kept this secret until now is that they were not only working on the second title, but the third as well.
Based on the statements of Shimokawa, the development team seem to have already completed the story of the second game, and are beginning the development of the setting of the third. While no release date was specified for the release of the third game, Shimokawa made a point of confirming the development of the third game had already begun. Shimokawa stated that it would be released somewhere in the range of a year and a half to two years following the release of Utawarerumono: The False Mask.
With this announcement from the head of the development studio, it seems that this series is set to continue onwards for the next few years. With the last two games of the trilogy being developed in such swift succession, there should be few delays in meeting this projected release goal.
Aquaplus also revealed that it would be hosting a “Big Aquaplus Festival” at the end of November this year. Various Aquaplus-related artists and voice actors will be featured along side first looks at upcoming games in development.
